  1. Great show, Jim! It is scary that we tend to put our trust and faith in people who may be experts in the field but gamble with our hard earned money based on a risk that happened to pan out for them in the past. I think communication on how much risk a client is willing to take is absolutely key. I like your explanation on how no one, expert or not, can predict the future. Thank you for the valuable information-and I love the Wizard of Oz references!

    • Thanks Deitra. You hit the nail on the head with the communication issue. Unfortunately over my 20+ years I have not seen this, were it is communicated to the client exactly how their portfolio has performed over the last 40 years, how many years its lost money and what percentage did it go down. and even if they start out with a proper allocation and risk tolerance, their portfolios are not re-balanced, so they don’t have the portfolio they originally thought they had. Since usually these things are not communicated and done, the client thinks in his mind a 15% is acceptable, but when their portfolio drops 20-25+% they are shocked because expectations do not meet reality. I believe our process and communication elevates most of these issues, issues which typically lead to bad investor behavior and lose of their wealth. Thanks for commenting. Jim

  2. JIm, your references to the Wall Street Bullies, with their speculative EGO investing strategies and goal of maximmizing transactional costs, is spot on. Thanks for sharing your insight. It sounds to me that you advise your clients to enlist the modern portfolio theory of investing. If so, I agree, free markets work in the longrun. Looking forward to your next (entertaining) show.

    • yes Patrick, we actually have a unique process coined “Free market Portfolio Theory” which utilizes the Modern Portfolio Theory and Three Factor Method, all researched to maximize returns for the level of risk tolerance an individual is at. My money is in the exact same portfolio as my clients, meaning we all own the exact same thing, except we have different percentages of over 12,000 holding based on our risk tolerance. We do not speculate on individual portfolios or try to cherry pick the next winning mutual fund. Our turnover and transactions cost are minimal, making them very tax efficient..
